Microsoft Open License Programme for Education, Charities & Government

This two year agreement from Microsoft simplifies budgeting by fixing the price banding of licenses, for the duration of the agreement term, from the initial date of your order.

Organisations with 5 to 250 PCs can benefit from an easy setup process whereby you simply place an initial purchase order and can then start using the licensed products immediately.

Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government are available to qualifying commercial, academic, charity and government organisations.

Open License is a good choice for organisations that want:

  • To acquire at least five licenses with one license agreement for all orders
  • To pay as they go
  • To use the advantages of Volume Licensing, such as downgrade rights and easier license management
  • To pay up front for their software licenses
  • Increased savings over retail prices
  • The option to acquire licenses without having maintenance automatically added
  • The flexibility to grow with evolving business needs
  • Easier compliance management with electronic license management

In addition, qualifying customers who need a large volume of software can use pools and points to acquire licenses with additional savings and an established price level for additional acquisitions over the agreement term.

Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government offer perpetual licenses, which are everlasting and valid if the licensed product is being used in accordance with the license-agreement requirements. Open License customers own their licenses and have perpetual use of the licensed products under their agreements as of the time the licenses are acquired.

Online Services

Microsoft Online Services is a set of services that can help you incorporate Microsoft Cloud services into your business and expand your offerings. Online Services are not offered through Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government.

However, organisations can subscribe to Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) services — including the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Standard Suite and Microsoft Business Productivity Online Deskless Worker Suite services — and Windows Azure platform services through the subscription-based Microsoft Online Subscription Programme (MOSP). There is a five user subscription license minimum requirement for the initial order. All new customers — including customers who have conducted a trial of the services and customers with an existing Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities, or Open License for Government agreement — must agree to and electronically sign the Microsoft Online Subscription Programme agreement. The agreement is not linked to their existing Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities, or Open License for Government agreement.

Software Maintenance Options

Microsoft Software Assurance for Volume Licensing is a comprehensive maintenance offering that helps customers get the most out of their technology investments. Software Assurance benefits vary with each Volume Licensing programme. In addition, server licenses come with benefits that are different from those for desktop licenses.

Software Assurance is an additional option under Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government. Customers can acquire a license and Software Assurance pack for the remaining balance of the term of the authorisation number. Customers must pay for Software Assurance in two-year increments, regardless of when it was acquired. In cases where time has passed after the initiation of an Open License agreement, it may be advantageous for customers to open a new Open License agreement to receive the most value from the Software Assurance acquisition.

Software Assurance may also be acquired on its own within 90 days of retail full-packaged product or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) acquisitions of system or server software product licenses.

Note
Software Assurance pricing is linked to the price of the license. The Software Assurance price is a percentage of the license price, computed annually. The annual Software Assurance fee is equivalent to 29 per cent of the license cost for desktop products and operating systems and 25 per cent of the license cost for server software.
Software Assurance benefits for Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government extend across the software life cycle and cover planning, deployment, testing, usage, maintenance and migration processes. Benefits include New Version Rights, Windows 7 Enterprise, Microsoft E-Learning, Home Use Programme, 24¤7 Problem-Resolution Support, Cold Backups for Disaster Recovery and Extended Hotfix Support.

Licensing Offerings

Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government offer four acquisition options to help meet the needs of customers:

  • Licenses only
  • License and Software Assurance packs at the time of license acquisition
  • Software Assurance renewals
  • Software Assurance acquired on its own within 90 days of retail full-packaged product or OEM acquisitions of system or server software product licenses
Licensing Fulfilment

Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government do not include media kits. Customers can download licensed products for no additional charge at the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Centre (VLSC). Customers can acquire media separately, for a fee, from Viglen.

Agreement Term

Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government offer a two-year agreement term that begins when Microsoft has received the agreement and purchase order. The agreement is non-renewable.

Agreement Renewal Options

Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities and Open License for Government agreements are nonrenewable. Customers may start a new Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities, Open License for Government, or other Volume Licensing agreement at any time. The Software Assurance for all licenses in an agreement ends when the agreement term ends, regardless of when the Software Assurance was acquired. Customers can reinstate their Software Assurance benefits by starting a new Open License, Open License for Academic, Open License for Charities, or Open License for Government agreement for Software Assurance within 90 days of the expiration of the agreement only.
