The Challenge
Jubilee International High School is located in
Runnymede, Surrey, and has a student population of
almost 700 and 120 staff members. It prides itself on
its innovative approaches to all aspects of learning,
such as forging strong links with partner schools across
the globe and developing an exemplary Performing Arts
department. In order to ensure that both pupils and
teachers have access to essential coursework and
resources while increasing the size of the student body,
the school needed to implement a state-of-the-art
IT infrastructure. IIts existing fragmented data
storage platform was reaching the end of its life and
could not provide the capacity and scalability
needed to meet the school’s goal of making itself an
IT leader. Its backup system also needed to be
modernised to keep students’ work safe, as it was
based on a tape library solution which
was inef ficient and costly.
The Solution
Jubilee High chose to implement a storage area network
(SAN) to enable cost effective centralised management
of its data and content. Having previously worked with
Hitachi Data Systems Platinum Partner Viglen, it
approached the organisation again for help with this
project. Viglen proposed a solution based on a Hitachi
Adaptable Modular Storage model 200, which provided
1GB of storage per student and 5GB per staff member.
It is used to store both curriculum related content and
administrative programmes like e-mail and student
directories.
Hitachi Copy-on-Write Snapshot software was also
deployed to ensure student work is easily restored in an
emergency through fast point-intime data replication.
Viglen provided training during deployment to ensure
the SAN and backup could be effectively managed in
house. Meanwhile Hitachi Data Systems provides
ongoing support and monitoring to ensure any hardware
issues are resolved quickly.
The Business Benefits
The school expects to see significant cost savings over time
thanks to the deployment of the SAN. Its simple scalability
features mean that it will not be necessary to purchase
additionalstorage and backup equipment in order to expand
capacity. Moreover, the reliability of the system was
demonstrated right from the beginning, working straight out of
the box.
After quick deployment and migration, the IT team at Jubilee
High is looking forward to making use of its new SAN to build an
innovative set of ICT tools for the school community. It plans to
merge its two networks (curriculum and administrative) into one
to simplify management and will then develop a remote learning
environment for its students so that they can access content
from anywhere. It sees the Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage
200 underpinning its SAN as the heart of a new, future proof IT
resource for the school and its student.
